Great story! I too, was molested and can totally relate to your story! Although it was by a man that I knew as my grandfather and once I spilled the info to my father n grandmother, we have not spoken in over 6 years! They have not met either of my sons, but it is their loss!

Rebecca, it is so sad how many women I come across who are sexual assault survivors. I have written about this topic before because I think it is so important for women to know that, though it may seem like breastfeeding will be triggering, it can actually be really healing and empowering. I think often people are quick to tell a mom who's been raped to just bottle feed to avoid having to deal with this issue, but I think we do moms a disservice with that kind of advice. If a mom is against the idea of trying, she needs love and support. But let's not just assume she won't breastfeed! She may be open to the idea and it may be life changing!

Elita, I have been receiving so many e-mails from Mothers who have experienced some of the same violation and breastfeeding as well as motherhood helped them to heal. This is something that really needs to be explored. Unfortunate but fortunate, if you know what I mean.

Rebecca - Thank you so much for sharing your story and your spirit! Breastfeeding was similarly empowering for me, although for totally different reasons: I'd wanted a natural childbirth in a birthing center but ended up with an emergency c-sec (we all know how that crappy story goes).

Not only was I disappointed with my childbirth experience, I then had complications from the c-sec; my would ruptured and my abdomen had to be left open to heal. For SIXTEEN WEEKS. I was in excruciating pain, had to have a nurse change my wound dressing every day, and could hardly pick up my son from his bassinet. But what i could do - practically the only thing - was breastfeed him. Even when I was in too much pain to sit up, I nursed him lying on my back. It was the only thing that went "according to plan" and it reminded me that my body - despite the pain and the wound and the sadness - was still a force. My son thrived all from the perfect food my body made for him. That was power in a powerless time...
