I had NO IDEA it was that difficult to donate breast milk to a milk bank! I had heard about the 12 month cut off, but never knew about the other stipulations. What's strange to me is that those sorts of questions (do you have tattoos, have you been with someone who's had homosexual sex) are trying to get at whether or not you might be HIV or hepatitis positive and honestly, even if you have tats or your last boyfriend was bisexual, if you've been tested and you have the results to prove you're negative, what difference does it make? Honestly, I'd be so tempted to lie, since having 4 tattoos makes me ineligible to donate my milk.

It really needs to be easier for moms who need milk to safely and inexpensively get it for their babies, and also for moms to get the information they need up front to make sure they produce enough for their babies to begin with, since so many supply issues can be helped or prevented.

Milk banks frustrate me, too. I tried to donate to the nearest one (Iowa, and I'm in Minnesota) and it was an insane amount of paperwork from me and my doctor, plus they wouldn't even consider my milk if I had any tattoos, had ever slept with anybody who'd had a homosexual relationship, had been to any of about 40 countries and a bunch of other things. I was still approved, but they would only take my milk until my baby was 12 months old and then they misplaced paperwork and got back to me when he was nearly that age already. I ended up not being able to do it at all, despite having the ability to pump lots that I could have donated.
