I strongly suspect that the use of a nursing cover was related to media regulations re: "nudity" on prime time TV. I think they were likely trying to avoid showing more than is allowed. Sadly, breasts, even in the context of breastfeeding, are often considered "nudity" by media standards.

I live in upstate SC, and the hospital I had my older daughter in is in a smallish town. I have never heard of women sharing rooms there. The women's and children's center was built just a few years ago and they wanted it to have a homey feel. They are all about keeping up with the bigger hospitals. But, wow--I am spoiled. It must be so awful to deal with the challenges of a new baby AND a bunch of strangers tromping through with flowers and balloons! I could barely handle all of my own visitors. Then I had a homebirth the second time. Problem solved!

I forgot to add that the whole idea of a woman using a nursing cover in the hospital is laughable. After going through labor you lose your modesty, that and the fact that your exhausted makes you just not care who sees what. More strangers saw my breasts during my stay in the hospital than in my whole life.

I just found your blog while doing a search on cluster feeding. I'm breast feeding my second child but still feel like a newbie. All the websites talk about babies who breast feed every 2 hours, not many address the fact that a lot of newborns want to nurse a lot more often than that, along with cluster feeding and growth spurts can make moms feels like they aren't making enough milk which is discouraging.

I had nurses trying to encourage me to give formula when I had my first child and not knowing any better I listened to them and she was given some supplemental bottles. This time around, I knew better but thankfully everyone was in full support of breast feeding this time around. I wish this wasn't so common because first time moms aren't always educated on how giving bottles so early can derail their breast feeding relationship.

I loved the overall positive message on many levels. I never even watch this show. I loved her calm approach to labor and breastfeeding. Hopefully Pam will continue to nurse for a year or more!! Even that other guy making a silly baby contract in the basement wanted his baby breastfed for 6 months! Ok so then he wanted to feed it something weird after that but still! I want to praise this show, the writers and the actors! Great message to America! The supervising producer and writer @dannychun is someone i know! Just found out he did this show! He used to write for the Simpsons. I work with his dad, an AWESOME pro-breastfeeding pediatrician! Fabulous!

Just found you're blog, and I really like it! I haven't gotten into the Office much, but I do know the characters, and I love that type of humor. Wish I would have seen that- sounds hilarious!

I loved the episode! At the end when Jim went to the car, I said to my husband, "Please let her have some success before this episode is over!" I was so glad that they showed it can be a rough start, but breastfeeding is totally worth it. I really wanted to reach through the tv and slap the nurse too.

Jenny, where do you live? Here in Florida it definitely does happen. Insurance won't cover the private room and at my hospital it was an extra $200 per night. Worth it if you can afford it, but many families can't. Pam & Jim had a decent roommate. When my cousin gave birth, her roommate had visitors around-the-clock and they were constantly.arguing.

I thought the whole premise of them sharing a room with another family was hard to believe. Does this really happen in more populated areas? That would have really bothered me.

And I agree, that nursing cover was hideous!
