Wow! This is so very similar to what I went through with my son, although his milk transfer was so bad my milk supply didn't really "come in" all at once, but developed later after his tongue tie was fixed.

But I did also want to say, if money is an issue, do some research while you're pregnant about lower cost ways to access an IBCLC. In my community one of the hospitals has a breastfeeding group run by an IBCLC, so I was able to get my son's tongue tie diagnosed for a $5 donation (which I could have skipped if I hadn't had the money). Since our pediatrician knew the group leader and trusted her opinion, he was able to refer us to an ENT based on her recommendation. The ENT visit cost a chunk of money, but I was able to get good breastfeeding assistance for nearly nothing.

Thank you for sharing this. I love the detail you go into about breastfeeding problems in the beginning. Congratulations on your new baby, and that's HUGE about her having three poopy diapers the first day. Being a mom myself, I well remember the importance of those first poopy diapers, almost to prove that my body was producing enough colostrum to sustain my baby. That first diaper is a badge of honor, huh? :)

Thanks for sharing. The hospital where I delivered Central Baptist in Lexington, KY has a breastfeeding clinic. First visit with an ibclc is free after you leave the hospital! It was my 2nd time around too and I'm glad I called and went.

I am a closet-secretly-recommending-formula breastfeeding mama. You can't imagine how many mothers I convinced to continue breastfeeding AFTER they have supplemented.

But to be fair to some online friends.... my babies do not poop after the 1st poop in the hospital for A WEEK. Both of them.

I'm so glad you found such a tongue tie friendly doctor. We went to an ear nose throat doctor, and he said my LO was fine no tongue tie. Then we saw Dr. Kotlow and he cut her posterior tongue tie, and upper lip tie. I would seriously recommend anyone to go to Dr. Kotlow he was great.

My daughters are both lip tied, but I had no idea with my first. We just eventually got into a rhythm, but it still is not comfortable. Fortunately, hers is not very severe. My second's was very severe and I always knew her mouth looked wrong. Thank God I ran across an article on lip ties and we had her ENT snip it when she was under for another surgery. We will get my 2yo's dealt with once she weans as I worry it will alter her bfing too much and I need her to keep nursing to keep up my supply while I pump for her sister. I wish I had known about lip ties 2 years ago!

I first heard about "Rule No. 1" from Linda Smith (http://www.bflrc.com/ljs/breastfeeding/rulbfhlp.htm). Another incarnation of the Rules includes "Protect mom's milk supply," which is also important. thank you for sharing your story!! mine is amazingly similar to yours - tongue tied boy that the dr brushed off, but worked through it, tongue tied daughter that we had to drive 3 hours away for a frenotomy with an awesome dr (dr. saenz). everyone kept telling me she was doing fine, but she was barely gaining enough and i was constantly worried. after attending a lecture on tongue tie from diana west (at breastfeeding: the gold standard conference), it clicked! we finally got hers clipped when she was 2 months old.

That is ridiculous! Back in the days when everyone breastfed and babies needed to be able to eat well at the breast, midwives would keep one fingernail long in order to snip a tight frenum right at birth! It's only been since birth moved into the hospital and women stopped breastfeeding that we now have to study to death the obvious: tongue ties make breastfeeding difficult and painful!

In our area, if a mom has Kaiser, she gets free lactation consultants. I always ask and point in that direction when it's a big problem.

About tongue tie- I heard one mom say that her doctor didn't want to diagnose tongue tie because "it's the new thrush" meaning it's the "new" sore nipple solution. I wish doctors wouldn't act like it's something that's not important. I have seen some babies that really need their tongue ties cut and it's frustrating that there's not support. Thanks for the link to the list of doctors that do tongue tie- I only know of one in the area. I'm going to see if there are more.

My daughter was lip tied - the frenum between her upper lip and gum was very tight and she couldn't flange her lips open wide enough to latch well. However everyone - LCs, Pediatricians at the hospitals, nurses, our peditrician - said it was no big deal. We nursed - painfully - for months. Finally at 4 months I couldn't take it anymore and booked an appointment with an EN&T doctor who took one look at it and couldn't believe that she was exclusively breastfed with that tight of a frenum. 1 clip and our breastfeeding relationship was completely different - it became a bonding time instead of a feared painful experience.

If I could tell moms one thing it would be to LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. No one knows your baby like you do. If you think something is wrong, it probably is and there is no harm in getting a second, third or maybe even fourth opinion. If our next baby is lip or tongue tied, it'll be getting clipped immediately.
