Leading up to it they kept saying no food or drink after midnight before an 8:30 apt. No way I was going with that. I looked it up on KellyMom and saw breastmilk was okay two hours ahead. When I mentioned it they looked it up and had the info but never suggested it themselves. Right before the procedure a nurse asked after feedings and when I said 6:30, she assumed pm. I set her straight, she went to check, and came back educated. ;) Another nurse and the anesthesiologist said nursing her right after was a perfect way to help her adjust as she woke. I nursed Sam in the waiting room at the ped, in the ped's office, in my doctor's office, at the hospital, at the GYN, at . . . well, everywhere in a healthcare setting.

I will admit to being somewhat ignorant to most of the issues discussed around nursing in public BECAUSE I was so sheltered. My son was breech and required a hip ultrasound when he was very young. He hated being held down with his legs extended. Neither the technician nor the radiologist would allow me to lean over and nurse him while he was lying there (which would have relaxed him) or even let me nurse in the room while we were waiting for something. Instead they criticized me for not bringing a bottle or pacifier (at that time, we were using neither) and brought me a bottle of water to give him to calm him down. Water can be very dangerous to newborns! And he wasn't being bottle fed! I wish then I had had the confidence to stand up for both of us.
<link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' with him, so we knew an ultrasound of his kidneys would be in the future. We live in NY, so anytime we go to a lab there is a VERY long wait. My little guy actually slept almost the entire time while we waited (2 hours). He woke just as we had to go in and the tech asked if I had a bottle that I could give him while she did the procedure because he was already screaming to nurse. I explained that I breastfed him and she said "oh, well I'll make it as fast as I can then". At one point she also asked if I might have a pacifier to calm him. But, neither of my kids were falling for a fake nipple, not when they could have the real thing!

My pediatrician on the other hand, was amazing (she has since taken a leave of absence and we miss her greatly). Every time we gave my little ones a vaccination she actually encouraged me to nurse them as she gave the shot. She was very supportive of breastfeeding, as is the whole practice that we go to.

Sadly, most of the mothers I know here, bottle feed. They say they can't be tied to their baby all the time. Makes me feel for that baby that is missing out on the best that their mama's could give them. And, happy that my two babies (now 3 and 22 months...the 22 month old is still nursing on average 4 times a day). The regular nurse at the pediatrician, Miss Eleanor, is so totally awesome and is always encouraging about breastfeeding. She's like a cool grandma. One time we had a different nurse and she said I couldn't nurse while my daughter got shots in case she jerked when injected. I said calmly but not very politely, "The only jerk in this room is you and you aren't very good at your job if you can't vaccinate a moving baby. Get Miss Eleanor and let the front desk know you are no longer iterested in being our nurse for future appointments.".
My 4 year old broke his leg last week and had to be transferred to a childrens hospital for surgery. Of course I didn't want to leave his side while he was hospitalized, but I also couldn't leave my 16 month nursling without her "boops". I was told that hospital policy was no babies overnight if they were not patients. I told the nurse on duty that I would not leave my son and also could not leave my daughter and asked if she had any suggestions. She said the nurse manager came on shift at 6 am and if we could leave before then and come back right after 6 then it would be fine. My daughter, now 3 years old, had a heart defect that was repaired surgically at 4.5 months, and has had several echocardiograms, mostly in her first 6 months.

(Once she learned how to latch at 6 weeks old) she's nursed through many, if not all, of her echos.

Her most recent one was when she was about 2 1/2, and as I crawled up on the table with her, I told the tech "Don't mind me. If I were the one who needed the echo, you'd be rubbing that thing all over my naked boob, so if you bump into me or something, I don't mind."

We've been pretty lucky with our other healthcare providers, too. I always nurse her after (and sometimes during) shots, and one pediatrician really got points from we when, while she was nursing, she grabbed a tissue and wiped her runny nose - which, of course, was right next to my breast. :-)

I have been lucky so far with health providers.
