My husbands support was key. He insisted I take a walk alone daily and warded off formula/supplementing recommendations from the grandparents when I struggled in the beginning. It&#39;s nice to hear our realities as women of color expressed (&quot;The women in my family worked. Housewifery was not an option...&quot;) and the role that plays in our breastfeeding decisions. I work full time and was able to pump and breastfeed my daughter for just over two years until my son was born 10 weeks ago and he took over her shift. :-) I&#39;m lucky to be in a workplace that provides a clean, private, secure space for nursing and that I have control over my schedule to pump as needed during the day. Not every working mom does, which has a significant impact on ability or willingness to continue nursing after returning to work.<br /> Also, the support of my husband was more instrumental than my mother as she hadn&#39;t nursed me and she and her sister/my aunts saw nursing beyond 3-6 months as very uncommon. That Grandmother reminds me sooo much of my own mother it was scary...except my mother did in fact breastfeed me. My mom breastfeed me but I think it was only because she was at-home anyway taking care of her infirmed relatives at that time. Her and my father have been proud of that decision with me and I am lucky that I grew up thinking it is normal. They gave me a gift in growing up thinking there is a positive association attached to it.
