Thanks for taking such an important issue. I'm adding more.
Here are just a few of the benefits babies stand to gain from the breastfeeding relationship:

1.less gas, diarrhea, and constipation

2.stronger immune systems 3.higher IQ 4.fewer allergies and less risk of asthma 5.fewer incidences of diabetes and cancer 6.less risk of childhood obesity 7.less risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) 8.better dental and facial development, and decreased likelihood of dental caries. I guess I'm about a month late with this comment, but I had to share.

Once I read a comment from a guy that said: "This woman was breastfeeding her child, and I could see her saggy boobs, and her stomach rolls, oh my God!!!"

In other words, he was saying that he was not so much offended by the fact that she was breastfeeding, but by the fact that she did not have the 'perfect' body. Perky boobs, wasbord abs, after having a baby? Hmm...

The comment about breast milk being a dangerous bodily fluid probably made me the most infuriated but those comments suggesting they are being inconvenienced by it is a close second. Not only have women been doing this for 1000s of years, as someone else mentioned, but they did it in PUBLIC all the time and NO ONE CARED! I've seen pictures from the 30s in the US and no one is looking a the nursing mom, just going about their business - what a concept people. Grow up and get educated!

I've heard the comment, "We are never going to change society so just give the baby a bottle." My response: Society has changed. What do you think women did 200 years ago?! Another comment I've been told, "Why do you have to always be a rebel? Everyone gets it so just give us a break." Thank God I have a thick skin because I would have snapped on several people...while nursing...without the adult bar-b-que rib restaurant cloth bib labeled nursing cover. It doesn't matter what color or print you put on it (leopard, pink checkered, hounds-tooth) it's ugly!

See, this is the reason I don't say breastfeeding is intimate. For most people, intimate has sexual connotations, so intimate and private go hand-in-hand in their minds. We had a discussion about this on the blog last year.

Carissa, this post was not meant to scare and I'm sorry it did that! I think most women nurse their babies in public without ever being confronted, it's just that many women now are much more likely to stand up for themselves when it happens and seek recourse if possible. I had a woman ask me to cover up once, and when I told her it was perfectly within my legal right to nurse in public she backed down quickly. I think all of us need to perfect a bitch face that says "Don't eff with me." :)
